Teach English Online
Teaching English to Chinese students has exploded over the past few years. There are several opportunities to get online and teach.
You don’t have to have a teacher certification in English to apply for these opportunities. You only need to have a Bachelor’s degree, a computer with a camera, and a stable internet connection.
VIPKid is a company that hires people with a bachelor’s degree to teach English to Chinese students from ages 4-12-year-olds online. The classes are 30-minute sessions. The lesson plans are created for you but you will have to review the lessons in advance.
To apply to VIPkid, you must meet three minimum requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in any field
- Eligible to work in the US or Canada
- Have a minimum of one-year teaching experience (including homeschooling, tutoring, coaching, mentoring, or other life experiences)
In addition to the requirements above, your level of English must be fluent and will be evaluated during the interview. If accepted, there is a minimum of six months of commitment required.
You can earn anywhere from $17-$22 an hour based on experience and certification. The pay scale may go up or down depending on how well you do on your mock class interview. There are incentives to boost your pay.
I have read about people making $2000 and more a month.
Qkids is an interactive online platform that connects Chinese English learners between 4-12-year-olds. Unlike VIPKid, Qkids lessons are preset in the app so there is no lesson planning necessary.
However, you will need to familiarize yourself with the materials. Each class session is 30 minutes and you will have between 1- 4 students per class session
The following are required to teach:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Eligible to work in the US and Canada
- Minimum time commitment of 6 hours per week (the contract term is flexible)
The pay is $16 – $20 per hour (2 lessons). The base pay is $8 for a full lesson and $4 for a standby lesson (10 minutes with no teaching required). There are multiple bonuses such as $1 performance review from the family and $1 attendance bonus.
SayABC is different from the other companies because they offer online teaching opportunities to those with a bachelor’s degree, associate or those that have not yet graduated from college
Internship opportunities for college students in the US and Canada are provided. You will still need to demonstrate your teaching qualifications and show a minimum of one year of teaching experience. There is a three-month minimum commitment.
There are four classes a day from Monday through Saturday. Once a class is assigned, you teach the same class three times a week for the contract period of three months.
The classes are flexible, however, most class times are Monday through Saturday from 6 am and 8:30 am eastern time.
There are opportunities to be a substitute or Standby teacher. Standby teachers can earn an extra $7 per lesson bonus.

DaDaABC offers one-on-one student-teacher pairing to teach English classes to children in China age 4-16. To teach with this company, you must have a Bachelor’s degree and be a Native English speaker.
DaDaABC offers incentives, bonuses, and pay raises.
- Regular student bonus: 30% of base pay
- Trial class conversion bonus: $7 per student
- Incentive bonus: $1 per finished class

51Talk is another opportunity to teach English online to a wide range of students but the largest group is kids ages 4 to 12 years old. The classes are 25 minutes long, the minimum number of hours required is 30 peak time hours per month and a one-year minimum commitment.

- (An advantage) Have teaching qualifications or TESOL/TEFL/CELTA/TKT/CETYL certifications or other equivalent certificates

A new teacher begins with a base salary of $15 per hour. In addition, there are opportunities to earn bonuses which can further increase earnings each month. A promotion structure based on performance and training allows for base salary increases up to $22 per hour.
